Chapter 6 of 1 Corinthians consists of the Apostle Paul teaching and correcting the believers in the Corinthian church about their actions and beliefs. The main themes are litigation between believers, sexual purity, and holiness of the body.
1. Litigation between believers (verses 1-8)
background
- Paul rebukes the believers in the Corinthian church for fighting with each other and going to secular courts.
- He emphasizes that it is inappropriate for believers to be judged in secular courts.
detail
- They say that disputes between believers should be resolved within the church. Paul argues that since believers are the ones who will judge the world, they should be able to judge trivial matters.
- It is said that saints will judge even angels, and it would be a shame if they could not judge worldly matters.
- He says that it is a great shame for the church for believers to sue each other, and that it is better to suffer injustice and suffer losses.
2. Warning against immorality (verses 9-11)
detail
- Paul warns that unrighteous people will not inherit the kingdom of God.
- He lists sins such as sexual immorality, idolatry, adultery, homosexuality, theft, greed, drunkenness, swearing, and fraud, and says that those who continue these practices will not inherit the kingdom of God.
- However, he says that some of the Corinthians had committed such sins in the past, but were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name and Holy Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Holiness of the body (verses 12-20)
detail
- Paul emphasizes the balance between freedom and responsibility by saying, “All things are lawful for me, but not all are beneficial. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be restrained by anyone.”
- He says that food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, and that both will disappear. However, it is said that the body exists not for lewdness but for the Lord, and the Lord also exists for the body.
- Just as God resurrected the Lord Jesus, he will also resurrect us.
- Since the body of the saints is a member of Christ, we are warned that we should not pollute the body of Christ through lewd behavior.
- Paul commands believers to avoid fornication. It is said that a person who commits fornication commits a sin against his own body.
- He says that God dwells in the saints' bodies because they are temples of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we exhort them to give glory to God because their bodies are not theirs and were purchased with a price.
conclusion
1 Corinthians 6 emphasizes the inappropriateness of the Corinthians resolving disputes in secular courts, the importance of sexual purity, and that the believers' bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Paul reminds believers that they have a new identity in Christ, and strongly advises them to live a holy life appropriate for it.
