Chapter 15 of Romans consists of the Apostle Paul explaining his future missionary plans, emphasizing the need for the strong in faith to care for the weak and unity among Christians. The main points are as follows:
1. Responsibility of the strong (Romans 15:1-6)
Let the strong bear the weaknesses of the weak:
- Those who are strong in faith should not live for themselves, but should take on the weaknesses of those who are weak in faith. This is so that we may please each other for our good and edification.
- Christ did not please himself, and our reproach came upon him, as it is written in the Scriptures:
- The Bible was written for our instruction and to give us hope through patience and comfort.
- We pray that God is the source of patience and comfort, and that we follow the example of Christ Jesus and accept each other with the same heart, giving glory to God.
2. Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Romans 15:7-13)
Accepting each other:
- Just as Christ accepted us for the glory of God, so we must accept one another.
- The reason Christ became the servant of circumcision for the Jews was to confirm the truth of God and fulfill the promise given to the ancestors. There is also a purpose to enable Gentiles to give glory to God because of His mercy.
- Paul quotes several passages to emphasize the fact that Gentiles will praise God, rejoice, and have hope.
- I pray that God is the God of hope, and that He fills us with joy and peace through faith, and that He overflows with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
3. Paul’s ministry and purpose (Romans 15:14-21)
Description of Paul's ministry:
- Paul acknowledges that the saints of the Roman church have good knowledge and the ability to give advice, and explains that the reason he wrote more boldly to them was because, by the grace of God, he was called to be an apostle to the Gentiles.
- Paul's ministry is to ensure that Gentiles are sanctified by the Holy Spirit and become acceptable sacrifices to God.
- Paul boasts about what he has done in Christ Jesus and emphasizes that God has confirmed his ministry through signs and wonders.
- He focused on spreading the gospel to places where it had not yet been preached, and like the prophecy in Isaiah, he wanted people who had not heard the news of Christ to understand.
4. Paul’s missionary plan (Romans 15:22-29)
Spanish Mission Plan:
- Paul tried to visit Rome several times, but he never had the opportunity because of his ministry. Now he feels he has nowhere else to work, and plans to visit Rome on his way to Spain.
- Paul wants to fellowship with the saints and plans to stay with them for a while.
- Currently, Paul is on his way to Jerusalem to deliver relief offerings prepared by the saints of Macedonia and Achaia to help the saints in Jerusalem.
- This offering is to repay the Gentiles' spiritual debt to the Jewish believers by meeting their physical needs.
- After visiting Jerusalem, Paul once again reveals his plans to go to Spain on his way to Rome.
5. Request for prayer (Romans 15:30-33)
Prayer Request:
- Paul asks the saints in Rome to pray for him. He asks for prayers that he may be saved from the disobedient in Jerusalem and that the saints may joyfully accept his ministry.
- We also hope that he will come to Rome with joy and rest with the saints in the will of God.
- Paul concludes his letter by praying that God's peace be with them.
