Romans 8 is an important chapter in which Paul discusses new life and assurance of salvation in the Holy Spirit. This chapter explains the life of a believer who escapes the law of sin and death and lives according to the law of life and peace. Below I will explain Romans 8 in detail.
1. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (8:1-4)
Paul declares that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. This is because they have been set free from the law of sin and death and are under the law of life and the Holy Spirit. He solved sin by sending his Son to replace the law that God had rendered powerless due to sinful flesh. Therefore, believers do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Holy Spirit.
2. Life guided by the Holy Spirit (8:5-13)
Paul contrasts those who follow the flesh with those who follow the Spirit. Those who follow the flesh think about the things of the flesh, and those who follow the Spirit think about the things of the Holy Spirit. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Holy Spirit is life and peace. People who become Christians no longer live according to the flesh, but according to the Holy Spirit, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, they put to death the deeds of the flesh.
3. Becoming a child of God (8:14-17)
Those who receive the Holy Spirit become children of God. The Holy Spirit testifies that we are children of God, and we can call God “Abba, Father.” As heirs of God, we not only receive glory with Christ but also suffer with Christ.
4. Hope for the glory to come (8:18-25)
Paul says that present suffering is nothing compared to the glory that will be revealed. Creation also longs and waits for the glorious freedom of God's children. We are saved by hope, and this hope involves patience in waiting for what we have not seen.
5. The help of the Holy Spirit (8:26-27)
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, and even when we do not know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf with groanings that cannot be uttered. The Holy Spirit intercedes for the saints according to God’s will.
6. All things work together for good (8:28-30)
It says that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. God calls, justifies, and glorifies those he foreknew.
7. Inseparable assurance from God’s love (8:31-39)
Paul asks, if God is for us, who can be against us? God did not spare his own Son, but gave him up, so he will give us all things with grace. Also, the question is, who will accuse and condemn those whom God has chosen? Christ Jesus died for us, rose again, is at the right hand of God, and intercedes for us.
Paul concludes by declaring that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. This expresses our strong conviction that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing can separate us from God's love.
