Chapter 10 of Numbers is the chapter in which the Israelites leave the wilderness of Sinai and begin their journey to the land of Canaan that Jehovah had promised. This chapter covers the making and use of silver trumpets for the movement of the Israelites, the order of their march, and Moses' request to Hobab. 1. How to make and use a silver trumpet (verses 1-10)
1.1. Making of silver trumpets (verses 1-2)
- God commands Moses to make two silver trumpets. These trumpets are hammered and used to summon the congregation and set out the camp.
1.2. Use of silver trumpets (verses 3-10)
- Congregation Convocation : When the two trumpets are blown together, the entire congregation gathers in front of the door of the Tent of Meeting.
- Convocation of Leaders : When one trumpet is blown, the commanders of Israel gather together.
- Camp departure : When you blow the trumpet for a long time, the eastern camp departs. When you blow the trumpet for a second time, the southern camp departs. This means that each camp departs one after another at the signal of a long trumpet blow.
- War signal : In times of war, blow the trumpet so that Jehovah will remember and save you.
- Feasts and sacrifices : Feasts and sacrifices are also commemorated by blowing trumpets, and these are established as eternal regulations before God.
2. Israel’s first movement (verses 11-28)
2.1. Departure time (verses 11-13)
- On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud ascended from the tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai, and the children of Israel departed from the wilderness of Sinai and stayed in the wilderness of Paran.
2.2. Order of march (verses 14-28)
- Tribe of Judah : The tribe of Judah departs first. They were led by Amminadab, the son of Nahshon.
- Tribe of Issachar : The tribe of Issachar steps forward for the second time. They were led by Nethanel son of Shual.
- Tribe of Zebulun : The tribe of Zebulun steps forward for the third time. They were led by Eliab, son of Helon.
- Gershon and Merari descendants : carry the tabernacle and move.
- Tribe of Reuben : The tribe of Reuben steps forward for the fourth time. They were led by Elizur son of Shedeul.
- Tribe of Simeon : The tribe of Simeon is the fifth. They were led by Slumiel, the son of Surisaidae.
- Tribe of Gad : The tribe of Gad steps forward for the sixth time. They were led by Eliasaph son of Duel.
- Kohath descendants : Carry and move the utensils of the sanctuary.
- Tribe of Ephraim : The tribe of Ephraim is the seventh. They were led by Elishama, son of Ammihud.
- Tribe of Manasseh : The tribe of Manasseh is the eighth. They were led by Gamaliel, son of Pedashur.
- Tribe of Benjamin : The tribe of Benjamin is the ninth to step forward. They were led by Abidan son of Gideoni.
- Tribe of Dan : Lastly, the Tribe of Dan steps forward. They were led by Ahiezer, the son of Ammisadai.
3. Conversation between Moses and Hobab (verses 29-32)
- Moses asks his father-in-law, Hobab, to go with him to the land that Jehovah had given to Israel. But Hobab says he will return to his hometown.
- Moses persuades Hobab to come with him, emphasizing the need for Hobab's experience and guidance during the settlement and travel of Israel. Ultimately, Hobab accepts Moses' request.
4. Jehovah’s guidance and protection (verses 33-36)
- The Israelites march for three days with the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah in front of them.
- A cloud covers them and guides their way.
- Moses prays every time the Ark of the Covenant departs and stops.
- When setting out: “Arise, O LORD; let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you.”
- When to stop: “Return, O Lord, to the people of Israel.”
Numbers Chapter 10 shows the Israelites beginning to move systematically under God's guidance. They use silver trumpets according to God's commands, march according to the order given by God, and rely on God's protection and guidance.
