The era of Noah is recorded in detail in Genesis chapters 6 through 9 of the Bible. This era revolves around the fall of man, God's judgment, Noah's obedience, and God's salvation.
1. The Fall of Man and God's Plan of Judgment (Genesis 6)
- The Fall of Man : Genesis 6:1-4 explains that the wickedness of man was so great in the world that the sons of God married the daughters of men, and giants (Nephilim) were born. God saw that the wickedness of man was so great in the earth, and that the imagination of his heart was only evil continually (Genesis 6:5).
- God's Judgment Plan : God regrets creating humans and decides to wipe them off the face of the earth. But Noah finds grace in God (Genesis 6:6-8).
2. Noah and the Construction of the Ark (Genesis 6-7)
- Noah's Obedience : God commands Noah to build an ark. The ark was made of gopher wood, and was designed to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high (Genesis 6:14-16).
- Warning of the Flood : God warns Noah that a flood will come and destroy all life. Noah makes a covenant with God and is told to bring his family and two of every species into the ark (Genesis 6:17-22).
- Entering the Ark : Noah and his family and all the animals entered the ark, and God closed the door of the ark to keep them in. The rain fell for 40 days, and the flood lasted for 150 days (Genesis 7).
3. The Flood and Aftermath (Genesis 8)
- The Reduction of the Flood : God sent a wind to cause the waters to subside, and the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. After 40 days, Noah sent out a raven and a dove to see if the waters had subsided (Genesis 8:1-12).
- Coming Out of the Ark : When the dove did not return, Noah came out of the ark, saw that the land was dry, and offered a burnt offering to God. God promised never to destroy the earth by flood again (Genesis 8:13-22).
4. God's Covenant and a New Beginning (Genesis 9)
- Sign of the Covenant : God makes a covenant with Noah and his descendants, promising never again to destroy all life by a flood. He gives them the rainbow as a sign of this covenant (Genesis 9:8-17).
- Descendants of Noah : Noah's three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, become the ancestors of a new human race, from whom all nations descend. However, a curse is also mentioned for Ham's son Canaan, and a blessing for Shem and Japheth (Genesis 9:18-29).
