Chapter 11 of Numbers deals with the complaints the Israelites experienced after leaving the wilderness of Sinai and God's response. This chapter includes the people's complaints, God's response to them, Moses' grievances, the appointment of the elders, and the quail and God's judgment. The following are detailed information from Chapter 11 of Numbers.
1. The people’s complaints and God’s anger (verses 1-3)
- Complaints of the people : The people of Israel complain to the Lord.
- God's Wrath : The Lord's wrath burns and burns the ends of the camp.
- Moses' Intercessory Prayer : When Moses prays to the Lord, the fire goes out.
- Origin of name : The place is called Tabera (Burned). For the fire of the LORD burned among them.
2. The people’s complaints and dissatisfaction with the manna (verses 4-9)
- Complaints of a miscellaneous group : A miscellaneous group of people among the Israelites complain again, wanting to eat meat.
- Complaints of the entire people : The children of Israel also cry again and complain, remembering the food they ate in Egypt (fish, cucumbers, watermelon, leeks, green onions, garlic).
- Appearance and preparation of manna : The manna was like a tree seed and the shape was like a pearl. The people ground it in a millstone or pounded it in a mortar and boiled it in a pot to make it like cookies and eat it.
3. Moses’ hardships and God’s response (verses 10-15)
- Moses' Complaint : When Moses heard all the families of the people weeping at the door of their tents, he complained to the Lord. Moses appeals that he cannot take responsibility for all these people alone.
- Moses' Request : Moses asks God to kill him and not to burden these people.
4. Appointment of elders and the Spirit of God (verses 16-30)
- God's instructions : Jehovah tells Moses to gather the 70 elders of Israel and bring them to the Tent of Meeting. Jehovah gives them also the spirit of Moses, so that they may share with Moses the burden of the people.
- Presence of the Holy Spirit : The Lord came and distributed the spirit that came upon Moses to the 70 people, and they prophesied. But no more prophesying after that.
- Eldad and Medad : When the Holy Spirit came on Eldad and Medad, who remained in the camp, they prophesied in the camp.
- Joshua's request and Moses' response : Joshua asks Moses to ban Eldad and Medad, but Moses replies that he wants all the people to become prophets and for the Spirit of Jehovah to come upon them.
5. Quail and God’s judgment (verses 31-35)
- Provision of quails : The LORD sends a wind to bring quails from the sea and pile them up in a day's length around the camp.
- The Greed of the People : The people gather quail all day, all night, and the next day. The minimum harvest was ten gomels (about 220 liters).
- God's Judgment : Before the people can even chew the meat, Jehovah's wrath is kindled, and Jehovah strikes them with a great plague.
- Origin of name : The place is called Kibroth Hattaavah. This is because the greedy people were buried there.
- Next destination : The people depart from Kibroth Hattaavah and reach Hazeroth. In Hazeroth they stay.
Key Lessons and Implications
- Danger of Complaining : The people's complaints displease God and result in judgment. This shows that complaints go beyond simple complaints and can lead to distrust and disobedience to God.
- The Burden of a Leader : Moses' struggles and his honest prayer show how great the burden is on a leader. God listens to Moses' difficulties and provides help through 70 elders.
- Presence of the Holy Spirit : God gives many people his Spirit to prophesy. This symbolizes the positive impact the presence of the Holy Spirit has on the community.
- Consequences of greed : The people's greedy desires aroused God's wrath, which led to a great disaster. This warns us of the harm that material desires have on religious life.
Numbers Chapter 11 warns of the negative effects that complaining and greed have on faith, and emphasizes the importance of living a life that trusts in God's guidance and protection.
