Romans 5: Privileges and New Life of the Justified

Romans chapter 5 deals with the privileges and new life enjoyed by those who have been justified through Jesus Christ. Paul emphasizes that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have achieved peace with God and, furthermore, have experienced God's grace and love.

1. The result of being justified by faith (verses 1-5)

  • Peace with God : “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:1). Through Jesus Christ, our relationship with God is restored and we enjoy peace.
  • Grace and Hope : Because of Jesus, we stand in grace and have hope for the glory of God. “Through him also we have access through faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (5:2).
  • Joy during tribulations : The reason we can rejoice even during tribulations is because tribulations bring about perseverance, perseverance creates refinement, and refinement fulfills desires. “Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope” (5:3-4).
  • Love of the Holy Spirit : The reason we are not ashamed of hope is because God has poured that love on us through the Holy Spirit. “Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (5:5).

2. Evidence of love through Christ’s death (verses 6-11)

  • Jesus died while we were weak : While we were still weak, Jesus died for the ungodly. “For while we were still powerless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (5:6).
  • Proof of love : It is rare for a righteous person to die, but Jesus died for us sinners. “God demonstrates his own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (5:8).
  • Reconciliation with God : Now that we have been justified by the blood of Jesus, we are saved from wrath through Him. “Much more then, since we have now been justified by his blood, we will be saved from wrath through him” (5:9).
  • The Joy of Reconciliation : We have been reconciled to God through the death of Jesus, and we are saved through His life. “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, having been reconciled, we will be saved by his life” (5:10).
  • The Joy of Reconciliation : We have been reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, and because of this, we can rejoice in God. “Not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation” (5:11).

3. Contrast between Adam and Christ (verses 12-21)

  • Introduction of sin and death : Sin entered the world through Adam's disobedience, and because of that sin, all people faced death. “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned” (5:12).
  • Sin before the law : There was sin before the law, but sin was clearly revealed through the law. “Sin was in the world before the law was, but when there was no law sin was not considered sin” (5:13).
  • Contrast between Adam and Christ : Because of the sin of one man, Adam, many died, but through the gift of grace and righteousness of Jesus Christ, many were brought to life. “For by one man’s trespass many died, much more the grace of God and the gift through the grace of that one man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many” (5:15).
  • Gift of Righteousness : Adam's sin brought condemnation, but Jesus Christ's act of righteousness brought justification. “So then, just as one trespass led to condemnation for many, so one righteous deed led to justification and life to many” (5:18).
  • Righteousness of Obedience : Because of Adam's disobedience, many people became sinners, but through Jesus' obedience, many people became righteous. “For just as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous” (5:19).
  • Law and grace : With the coming of the law, sins increased, but grace abounded even more. “The law came in that transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (5:20).
  • Hope of eternal life : Sin brought death, but through God's grace, we gained eternal life through Jesus Christ. “So that just as sin reigned in death, so grace also might reign through righteousness, leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (5:21).
