Acts 18 covers the end of Paul's second missionary journey and the beginning of his third missionary journey. In this chapter, Paul ministers in Corinth and Ephesus, meets many Jews and Gentiles, and preaches the gospel. The following explains in detail the main content of Acts 18:

Ministry in Corinth (18:1-17)

  1. Move to Corinth (18:1)
    • Paul leaves Athens and goes to Corinth.
  2. Aquila and Priscilla (18:2-3)
    • Paul meets Aquila and his wife Priscilla, Jews from Pontus. They were driven out of Rome by order of Emperor Claudius.
    • Paul works with them and has the same occupation, making tents.
  3. Evangelism in the synagogue (18:4-6)
    • Paul debates in the synagogue every Sabbath, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
    • When Silas and Timothy come from Macedonia, Paul tells the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.
    • However, when the Jews opposed and slandered him, Paul shook off his clothes, left them, and decided to preach the gospel to the Gentiles.
  4. Conversion of the Gentiles (18:7-8)
    • Paul leaves the synagogue and goes to the house of Titus Justus. He was a man who feared God, and his house was next to the synagogue.
    • Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and his entire family believed in the Lord, and many of the Corinthians also heard and believed and were baptized.
  5. The Lord’s encouragement and ministry in Corinth (18:9-11)
    • The Lord appears to Paul in a vision and encourages him not to be afraid but to continue preaching.
    • Paul teaches the word of God in Corinth for one year and six months.
  6. Accusations against Paul and Gallio’s verdict (18:12-17)
    • The Jews accuse Paul and take him before Governor Gallio. They claim that Paul persuades people to break the law.
    • Gallio regards the matter as a Jewish legal matter, declares that he will not get involved, and drives them out.
    • The Jews caught Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him, but Gallio paid no attention to this.

Move to Ephesus and return to Antioch (18:18-22)

  1. Move to Ephesus (18:18-21)
    • After spending some time in Corinth, Paul sails to Syria with Aquila and Priscilla. At Cenchrea, Paul performs a vow and shaves his head.
    • After arriving in Ephesus, Paul argues with the Jews in the synagogue, but they want him to stay longer.
    • Paul says he must go to Jerusalem for the next feast, and leaves Ephesus after promising to return if it is God's will.
  2. Return to Antioch (18:22)
    • After arriving in Caesarea, Paul goes up to Jerusalem, visits the church, and then returns to Antioch.

Beginning of the 3rd missionary journey (18:23-28)

  1. Travels through Galatia and Phrygia (18:23)
    • After staying in Antioch for a while, Paul tours the Galatia and Phrygia regions to strengthen all the disciples.
  2. The Appearance of Apollos (18:24-28)
    • Apollos, a Jew from Alexandria, arrives in Ephesus. He was very learned, well versed in the Bible, and taught the way of Jesus, but he only knew the baptism of John.
    • Aquila and Priscilla take Apollos with them and explain the way of God more accurately.
    • Apollos wants to go to Achaia, and the brothers write letters encouraging him and recommending him to the disciples.
    • Apollos arrives there and gives great help to the believers through grace and refute the Jews by proving that Jesus is the Christ through the Bible.
